Once again ignorance and intolerance has reared its ugly head on campus. This time it's Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in Murfreesboro. The topic is Nathan Bedford Forrest.
Forrest was a Confederate General. After the war he joined other Confederate veterans in Pulaski TN to form the original Klu Klux Klan (KKK). That is not the same Klan that terrorized black people during the 20th and 21st centuries. Forrest backed away from the Klan in 1869 when events turned violent. The KKK was then disbanded.
In the 1870's, Forrest urged reconciliation between whites and blacks. Forrest believed everyone should be part of one people, something Abraham Lincoln did not think was possible.

Well the poop hit the fan after that was released to the public. It was that Confederate flag that caused the punk to kill people. Ever notice how liberals always blame anything but the killer for the murders? Usually it's the gun, but in this case it was that damn flag!

The flag did not walk into that church and kill anyone, anymore than the gun walked into the church and fired itself.
Instantly, a movement to erase history swept the nation. All signs of the Confederacy (and slavery) must be removed from sight! Nearly all signs of the Confederacy, and especially Nathan Bedford Forrest, disappeared. Nashville even tried to hide a memorial on private property honoring Forrest because it could be seen from a busy freeway.
Well, whether you like it or not, slavery, the Confederacy and Nathan Bedford Forrest are not only part of the history of the South, but it's also part of this nation's history. How can we learn from past mistakes if we don't even know what those mistakes were?
It's not surprising liberals want to whitewash this history. It was Democrats who supported slavery, created the Jim Crow laws and opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. But the students at MTSU really don't have a dog in that fight. Not only are they not affected by Forrest, the Civil War or slavery, they are privileged to be in college, probably on mommy and daddy's dime.
MTSU has a building named Nathan Bedford Forrest Hall. It houses classrooms and the ROTC. Ever since the punk in South Carolina went on his killing rampage, students have been protesting the name of that building and demanding it be changed. They choose to look only at eight years of the man's life and ignore the other 48 years of his life. They ignored the fact he put himself between gunfire and black soldiers, willing to risk his life to save them. They ignore his pleas for reconciliation during the last years of his life. They ignore the fact Forrest opposed violence in the KKK.
The ignorant, history-challenged judgmental children of MTSU probably has somebody else paying for their college, and they probably expect somebody else to pay for their intolerant demands. Talk about entitlement.

I'm sure those kids have no clue what it would cost to change the name of the building, nor do they care. They haven't lived in the real world yet. Well, it will cost a LOT of money to change that name. As a Tennessee resident, property owner and taxpayer, I am not the least bit interested in paying for this nonsense.
Like everyplace else, Tennessee needs a lot of stuff. Roads, bridges, mass transit for their major cities, healthcare for the poor, etc. Pissing away my money on something this stupid is not acceptable.

So where are we?
The Tennessee Board of Regents just approved changing the name of the building, but hold the phone. Before history can be erased in Tennessee, it has to be approved by the Tennessee Historical Commission, a state agency tasked with preserving history. What will happen? Who knows? Hopefully sanity will prevail.
